What to wear on deck in the polar night

The saloon is warm; the deck is not. A short packing list for a winter evening on open water.

Two climates in one evening

Most of the cruise is spent in heated saloons, with short trips outside when the sky looks promising. Dress so you can add and remove a layer in seconds.

Why it feels colder at sea

Tromsø's winters are mild for the latitude thanks to the Gulf Stream, but wind across the open strait still makes the deck feel far colder than a street in town.

Hands and head

Pack a hat that covers your ears and gloves thin enough to work a phone camera, or a thin pair under thicker mittens.

Feet

Choose warm boots with good grip. Snow and spray can leave the deck slick, and you will be standing still while you watch.

For photographers

Cold drains batteries quickly. Keep a spare in an inside pocket and bring the camera indoors between bursts on deck.

What to leave at the hotel

Outside food and drink aren't allowed on board, so leave the flask behind; the licensed bar sells drinks and tap water is free.
